I can select the updates ok and they seem to download ok but then i get a
message saying unable to successfully install updates?

The bottom of the review window says: A problem on your computer is
preventing updates from being downloaded or installed.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Disable your anti virus program's auto scan before attempting to
install. Turn it back on again once you're through.

Hi Gerry, had the same probs myself ... just keep trying over a 24 hour
period, lose sleep, waste your leisure hours, miss meals, ignore your family,
friends and kids and maybe it'll suddenly install for no reason at all.
Happened with me, probably nothing to do with you. I ended up switching off
and on a few times and uninstalling the non-installed pack !!
This is Microsoft remember ! I disabled firewalls/antivirus/everything but
don't knw if that made it work or just ...

Hey Gerry,

Follow these easy steps:

1. Click Start > Run and type regsvr32 wuapi.dll

2. When you receive the message that the DLL has been registered, click OK
and perform the same steps for each of the following commands under Start >
Run:
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

This should do the trick.

Fatdaddy,

Many thanks. I had reinstalled XP twice and wasted too many hours -- all to
no avail. Updates still would not work.

Your fix did the trick.

Thank you Fattdaddy;
the trick works. I just wonder two things;
one is why this trick needs to be done and two, how did you know about this
trick
