When i turn my auto update on, it continues running and process takes up 99%
of my system resources. Even if i stop the auto update and run windows
update manually, it takes a very long time during the detection process.

Can anyone help on this?

What happens if you run it with your antivirus and other security software
disabled? (I'd leave the XP Firewall enabled just in case.)

Try deleting the contents of this folder (or the folder itself) & reboot:

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore

If no joy, try deleting the contents of this folder (or the folder itself) &
reboot:

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution
