Windows Update v.5 does not work on XP

Like everyone else, when I go to Windows Update it just sits there. However,
I do know that v.4 was working on my XP Home Edition.

Now it just sits there. I get the opening message that it is checking and
that it might take a while. Then some writing on the status bar goes by too
quickly to read. There is a soft click from Explorer while the loading
indicator (blue bar in the status bar at the bottom of the window) quickly
jumps to "full" (all the way to the right) and then it just sits there with
the opening message. It does not scan, it does not do anything.

I am not sure, but I suspect there may be a systemic problem in v.5 Windows
Update.

I think the folks at MS are a bit out of touch. I consider myself technical
and I have been struggling with XP, the SP2 update and not the wonderful
world of Windows Update v.5. In every case, I had to manually download the
patched and push them through.

The fact is that v.5 is NOT working correctly. For everyone else that had
problems with v.5 and bothered to look into this newsgroups, I would ask that
you post your experience with it so Frank can fully appreciate the situation
and maybe have some leverage back to MS to get it fixed.

I hav gt v same damn problem and i dont no wots goin rong.

I too am having the same problem. I had some kind of terrible computer crash
and finally got it going again and now my computer acts like it did 2 yrs ago
when it was new. All my programs are welcoming me as a newcomer. Now I
can't get Windows update to get past.....Checking forlatest Windows Update
Software...
