Am having problems installing Windows Update v5. When I try and install i get
error 80070422. It asks me to ensure that automatic updates service is in
automatic and confirm that it is started. Well, i have enabled it but it
won't start. If i try to start it manually it comes up with error 1058: the
service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no
enabled devices associated with it. Have Automatic updates enabled on control
panel and on "auto in services" so how do i get the service started.

Hi,
I am assuming that you are checking the state of the service in services
snap-in (started by running services.msc in Start->Run).
Right click on the "Automatic Updates" service and select Properties
In the General tab, you will see the StartupType. I assume that you are
setting that to Automatic.
Then select "Log on" tab.
At the bottom, you will see the state of the service in the hardware
profile. Please check if it is enabled or disabled.
If it is disabled, click the "Enable" button and then select Apply
Now change to General tab and see if you can start the service now.

Please let us know if this solved the problem.

YES YES YES.Thank you.It was the "enable" command that did it.This is not
clearly defined in any help documentation anywhere that i can find.Searches
could not identify the error codes. It would be helpful if this info could
appear on the update site along with the other advice. It stops just short of
giving the answer.Just error codes " 0x080070422" and "1058"
Once again ,Thanks Sudheer

Hi,
Glad that it solved your problem
Can you please let me know what prompted you to disable it in the hardware
profile.
We are trying to understand why people disable it in the hardware profiles.

Thanks

Your solution about the logon tab and set to enable, solved the
problem for me. I kept wondering why simply setting it to automatic wouldn't
work, and hadn't checked there.

Your Question about why? Well to minimise the amount of (previously)
unneeded services that are running. I guess you could (blame is a strong
word) Blackviper's web site for that, and v4 worked perfectly. I am in the
habit of running windowsupdate roughly weekly or whenever I hear of security
problems so I take responsibility for my system. I dislike being forced into
being nannied (but have read that the service can be on automatic, just not
running and therefore not consuming *valuable* memory). OK I did that to
myself, but it shouldn't have been so hard to find an answer, and it
obviously isn't (wasn't!) needed.

The other problem I had (and solved) was the 80240030 problem that was
solved by clearing the cookies and the C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files
(objects) folder (search for it in these newgroups). This one seems stupid,
and likewise was very hard to find a solution.

Thank you for your (volunteered!) time, and I hope someone can put up clear
links to these solutions on the WU v5 site!!!
