Hi, I’ve been experiencing the problem whereby when trying to use windows
update it just hangs. It even stopped me from using any other programs. I was
not even able to reboot my machine. I couldn’t even access task manager. I
experienced this on machines with several software packages on, and on a
freshly rebuilt machine. I tried all the various suggestions posted on
various bulletin boards/Forums but to no avail. So started to look at the
problem myself. To get around the whole machine locking up I found that if I
installed Java I was able to access other programs etc but Windows Update
still hung.
So, I rebuilt my machine again, installed Java and then SP2 from my latest
TechNet CD’s. I then tried Windows Update, which worked. So I then removed
SP2 and rerun Windows Update. Windows Update informed me of the following:
‘To use this latest version of Windows Update, you will need to upgrade some
of its components. This version provides you with the following enhancements
to our service:
Express and custom installation: Choose only the most recent critical
updates or pick and choose from all available updates.
Smarter downloads: If downloading is interrupted, the process will start up
where it left off the next time you download that update.
Smaller downloads: Only the files your computer needs are downloaded,
saving download time and connection-speed costs.
One version: Only the most recent updates are offered to you.
Less clutter: You can now hide updates you don't want to see.
Update news: A News from Microsoft section on the Windows Update home page
displays tips and the latest information.

Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP
5.1 (KB842773)
0 KB, 0 minutes
This software updates the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) to
v2.0 and updates WinHTTP. These updates help ensure an optimal download
experience with future versions of Automatic Updates, Windows Update, and
other programs that rely on BITS to transfer files using idle network
bandwidth.’
After I installed the update as mentioned above (KB842773) the windows
update service ran fine.
This clearly shows that if your machine isn’t fully up to date prior to WUS
upgrading you to Version 5 you’re screwed!!! So why don’t Microsoft state
prior to the upgrade that you need to update BITS and WinHTTP or better still
incorporate it in the Version 5 upgrade????????????
Hope this helps?
