Windows Update Verification Failed due to ActiveX error

When trying to run Windows update, it prompts me to validate my software.
This fails and when I go through the troubleshooting, I get this ActiveX
error:

Error Name: TypeError
Error Number: -2146827850
Error Message: Object doesn't support this property or method
Error Description: Object doesn't support this property or method.

I have went through and selected all the settings that Update suggests to no
avail.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Heather

That goes for me too! Moreover, there doesn't seem to be any way of solving
the issue when the Diagnostics system doesn't check out. I've lost System
Restore and Windows Update, as well as not being able to access User Accounts
in Control Panel.
We can't be the only ones having this problem!

Convert that (negative) number to the equivalent hex value as a doubleword.

E.g. using Calc.exe in the Scientific View shows FFFFFFFF800A01B6
with Qword default. Clicking then on Dword yields 800A01B6

Now use the search that your web interface to newsgroups provides:
(e.g. press Alt-7 and paste or type your search term in there.)
Hint: prefix the hex value with 0x since that will find the most instances
of related incidents: 0x800A01B6

Hmm... there are a few different suggestions there for you to try.

This happened after the installation of the October round of updates?
If that's true, try the following:

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed the ActiveX problem
for several people, getting this problem after installing KB896688):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

You may have to reboot your machine afterwards.

HTH,
Freudi

Brilliant!!! Your advice worked, and I can now access Update, System Restore
etc. I didn't realise it was an update that had caused this, as I had just
upgraded Norton Anti Virus and blamed that!

Many, many thanks.

Well, the cause of the problem may or may not be still depending
on the AV scanner you're using. Especially, if didn't shut the AV
scanner down *completly* before installing any update, which I
strongly recommend.

You're welcome!

Glad it worked again,
Freudi
