I am running Windows XP Pro, but with no service pack
installed on. My question is about the new version of
windows update (Version 5): When it will be available and
to whom. I am concerned because I do not have any service
packs installed on my pc. Will I be able to download the
new windows update verion?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

I would encourage you to download Service Pack 2
for Windows XP as soon as it becomes available.
SP2 will install v5 of Windows Update.

Check this site frequently for SP2 status updates:

The final version of v5 has been available for a week on a limited
rollout.
v5 is slowly being installed on all computers so some have and others
are still at v4.

However you should worry more about your unprotected computer than the
Update version.
You need to install SP 2 as soon as available.

To Mike:
I read this thread. What worries me is that you have the original XP , minus the many security fixes.
Your note implies its is all pre-SP1.

Anyhow, before getting the new service pack, if you have no firewall setup, then do turn on the XP built-in firewall.
Secondly, be sure you have fully scanned your system for viruses .... all before you grab the service pack.

Thanks for all of your help, but I do not like to have
any servise packs installed on my pc, since it will make
it run slower. I had Windows 2000 installed with all the
servise packs and my pc was very very slow.
I have installed all critical updates, i am using an
updated antivirus and firewall program. Thus I am very
carefull while surfing the net, so I am not worried at
all.

Hi

Many that have installed the SP2 beta have stated that the
computer runs faster with SP2.

Ok, you have convinced me! I will install the SP2.
Since I do not have SP1 installed will I still be able to
install SP2 or will I have to install first the SP1?
Thanks,

Mike

SP2 replaces SP1 so you should not install SP1
prior to installing SP2.
