The windows update version 5 files were automatically installed on my machine on July 29 when my machine went to do its normal automatic update check.

There was no indication that the files were installing. I just noticed they were installed because I saw wuaclt.exe running and wondered what it was.

I'm also now redirected to the Windows Update version 5 website.

I haven't heard any news of WU5 being released.
Was it released and if not why did WU5 get installed on my machine?

I have Windows XP Pro SP1 installed.

Michael.
Yesterday was the limited rollout of the final release of V5.
A random set of Windows XP computers set to Automatic Update are
getting V5.
Unlike what was on computers, this is the final V5 and not Beta.

OK, well I noticed that that V5 automatically downloaded the wrong version of the Q867801 update. The version downloaded automatically was at:

http://au.download.windowsupdate.com...38d5504cce.exe

this version contained all the files mentioned in the bulletin except that
mshtml.dll is dated 21-Jan-2004 22:19 version 6.0.2800.1400 size 2,795,520
shlwapi.dll is dated 26-Jun-2004 00:00 version 6.0.2800.1557 size 394,752

These are older (this shlwapi.dll has a newer version number but older date) than the release version that can be downloaded through the bulletin at
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...01-x86-ENU.exe

After this old version installed I installed the newer version. Windows Update than tried to automatically install the old version on top of it. I finally had to disable automatic updates to get this to stop.

Why is this?

Possibly not quite. My PC is not set to Automatic Update, and is being
redirected to V5. While I could previously return to V4 by typing that
URL explicitly, this no longer seems to work. Sub-pages of V4, like
<http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/> still work, but
not the main site. And no, I haven't tried to roll back wuauclt - I'm
getting tired of fighting with MS over my PC: you win.
