Windows Update versus Microsoft Update

Hi all,

I thought that I have read that there are two distinct Windows update sites.
One is called Windows Updates while the second -- which includes Office
updates -- is called Microsoft Updates.

Whichever update site I have stored in my Favorites takes me to the
Microsoft Updates sites at
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us.

Am I correct in thinking there is a unique site for Windows Updates? And if
I am, would someone please post the URL?

Thanks.

Alan

Either URL will work for either Windows Update or Microsoft Update: you
can't choose one over the other just by selecting a URL.

To change from "Microsoft Update" to "Windows Update", then in "Microsoft
Update", click "Change Settings", and check "Disable Microsoft Update
software and let me use Windows Update only", and click "Apply changes now".

Hi Mike,

When I clicked on the
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us URL, I
got still redirected to the Microsoft Update site --
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof...ult.aspx?ln=en.

The only way I could get into Windows Updates rather than Microsoft Updates
was to first disable Automatic Updates via the Control Panel and then, when
I was in the Microsoft Updates Web page, I had to click on the Change
Settings button.

After I was in the Change Settings page I ticked the checkbox option to
"Disable Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Updates only."

Once I did this I can now click on the
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof...ult.aspx?ln=en that you
suggested and actually be taken to the WINDOWS Update site.

No it wasn't. Windows Update and Microsoft Update are two different things.
Windows Update updates only Windows, Microsoft Update also updates other
Microsoft products, as well as Windows.

Alan,

I tried what you suggested to disable the MU and enable WU. The "Disable
Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Updates only." checkbox is
not there. I tried it both with and without the Automatice Update enabled.
I do have the Microsoft Update function on my PC. Any help would be nice.

Hello cs,

As I'm back to using Windows Updates, I can't see if those options for
people who use Microsoft Updates are still there.

And I'm hesitant to change my options back to Microsoft Updates right now,
just in case I won't be able to go back Windows Updates afterwards.

Can anyone else here reading this thread verify if the option to change from
Microsoft Updates to Windows Updates is still available?

Yes, it is and always has been available to Microsoft Update users. All
they need to do is scroll down.
