I was notified of the SP 1 update for Vista, but only 13% of the download
completes. Then I receive an error message 80070246. Temp Internet files are
cleared, anti virus closed, ad blocker closed, and Windows temp file emptied.
Still get the error and am unable to download the update. Help would be
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I didn't get your result but I did go all the way through the download and
all three phases of the install only to be told that the install was
unsuccessful. This happened three times and the whole process took over an
hour each time. Then it spends another 20 minutes or so reverting to the
previous state. At least you have an error code. I have no idea why I come so
close and then fail (hardware problem? software problem? both?). I am
definitely unhappy.

Thanks for your reply. Since my first post I found that the error I was
receiving during the attempted download of SP1 was an "illegal character"
error #0x80070246. The discription of this error was "an invalid character
was encountered" By the way, I have Vista home premium 32 bit. Still having
trouble downloading from Windows Update. I already downloaded the stand alone
version from Microsoft, and now I'm downloading oncce again. Help
appreciated.

Again, is Windows Update offering you KB947821? If so, install it to
correct that error. Otherwise, instructions for downloading and running
CheckSUR manually will be found in the KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

Scroll down to the section "How can I manually install and run CheckSUR to
troubleshoot my system?"

Followed your suggestions, but nothing helped. Finally decided to reinstall
Vista to correct some file problems. Once that was done, all updates
downloaded and installed without a problem. That includes the SP1. All is
well for now! Thanks for your input.
