Last night my husband installed some windows updates (for Vista Business) and
the next time he tried to boot my laptop (Toshiba Tecra M2-S730) he got the
following message:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the
cause... File: BOOTVID.dll Status: 0xc0000098 Info: Windows failed to load
because a required file is missing, or corrupt.

I tried to boot from the install disk I used when I upgraded the machine
from XP to Vista but the computer won't boot from the DVD drive and will only
return to the message above. I tried all the options provided (safe mode,
last known good config, etc., etc.) but can't get further and cant get it to
boot from the DVD drive.

Any suggestions?

You need to set the CD drive as 1st boot device in the BIOS
then restart with the Vista Cd in place and watch for the message "push any
key to boot from CD"...push a key

Why do you want to update the BIOS????.........your problem will not be
solved by an update to BIOS.
You know what they say..if it ain't broke dont fix it!!

Peter, she simply misunderstood your advice.

Sherri, you don't have to UPDATE the bios, you simply need to get into it.
In other words you need to get into your computer's inner workings BEFORE it
tries to load any operating system.

I think it varies depending on computer, but there is a key to press as the
machine is booting. In my case, it's the delete key. If you stil have the
laptop manual, you can see what your key is. Lots of times its one of the F
keys, like F8.

Anyway, it will bring you into a non-graphic screen where you will see
various options on how your machine works.
You need to go into a boot option (it's probably labeled "boot"). And you
need to find out which device is its first boot option. Probably the C
drive. You need to make the DVD drive the first boot option.

Though it's simple, it's also tricky, especially if most of your life has
been spent with graphical user interfaces like Windows. This is
non-graphical, and your mouse won't even work while you're in it. You might
find it a little tricky moving around at first. And it's hard to describe it
step by step in an email.

You might check to see if friends or associates have ever done anything like
this and they can help you through it.
