OK the problem is fixed.
My continuing efforts on this established that I needed a reinstall of the
security update KB828741.
Yes that's right ... a "reinstall". I know for a fact that I did have this
update on my PC a week or so ago.
Something knocked it out ... I've heard there are viri out there that want
to prevent acess to Windows Update ... maybe by trashing DCOM? That's what
KB828741 says it fixes security ..wise, by the way.
So, it was not the Powerpoint Viewer 2003 install (still on my PC) or the MS
..NET Framework (I did uninstall that ... maybe I give it a go again later).
H'mmm ... unless ... of course either of those installs trashes KB828741 in
the their setup process?
So in summary the fix appears as:
I just now re-installed the KB828741 security update and then immediately
went to Windows Update successfully without the WU webpage system telling me
I needed to be Administrator (c'mon ... the dialog was erroneous from my user
perspective ... we known we logged on as the built-in Administrator for W2KP).
No critial updates after the obligatory WU scan by the way. I usually try to
keep this PC up to date.
