Windows Update Webpage Doesn't Display

When I open internet explorer and go to the Windows Update webpage @
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ a blank page appears. Also, my User
Controls window is blank, and, System Restore, when opened once, runs in
background, and when opened twice, the window shows up, nothing is in the
window. PLEASE help me with this situation. Also, Windows Media Player,
along with Direct Show web-content, will not open. When I open Windows Media
Player, I get an error message stating: An internal application error has
occured. In internet explorer, I get an error saying: Cannot create Direct
Show. I appreciate any help with this matter. Thank you.

I had all your errors on my own computer. Tried everything, but nothing
worked.
Decided to format and make a clean install, but when starting to install
Windows I had two choices: Upgrade (recommended) or clean install, and I
chose to give upgrade a try, since all settings and programs would be kept.
And what a surprise - everything worked fine afterwards and nothing was
lost. I recommend to give it a try, but first backup important files,
because you never know what happens in Windows. :-).
What caused all the problems and how re-install fixed them, I have no idea.
