Windows Update Website... computer too slow?

I am rebuilding an older computer at the moment. It is Celeron 300mhz
and I'm running XP Pro on it. I downloaded the ActiveX control for
Windows Update. When I go to the site it checks for it, then it lets me
choose between express and custom installs. I've tried both, but the
"Checking for last updates" goes forever, and I never get anything. Is
there a way to get around this? Is my computer too slow?
