Windows update on Windows 2000 server fails to work

Hi guys, I was hoping someone would be able to help me out with this.

I've been unable to get any updates to install through Windows Update
for a while now. Windows Update identifies the updates I'm missing but
they all fail to install. I think it stems back to when I forced
Windows to use v6 whilst it was still in beta (I might be completely
wrong!).

I've been fiddling around trying to get things to work and my Windows
Update is now not getting further than the screen that says it's
checking to ensure I'm using the latest version. No check actually
seems to happen.

So it looks like it's all gone horrible wrong and I really don't want
to reinstall Windows if I can help it! Can anyone suggest a way of
rolling back to v5 or even v4 of Windows Update or reinstalling v6?

All help gratefully received!

Cheers,

Ant.

Since my name is also Anthony, I thought I pass along the tip that I found

We also have a Win2k server that fail to run the V6 version of Windows Update.
I finally found a way to go back to V4 when visiting
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

1) move the file "wuweb.dll" from your c:\winnt\system32 directory to some
temp folder. (I suggest move instead of delete incase if something happens
you can move it back.)

2) also look for the "wuweb.dll file if you have a
c:\winnt\system32\dllcache directory and do the same thing.

3) try visiting windowsupdate.microsoft.com again.... you should be on V4

hope it works... let me know...

I can't believe it was that simple! How come none of my searches
brought this up?! I have a feeling I've broken so much stuff now
trying to fix it (my event log is littered with errors) that I'm going
to have to reinstall anyway although for some reason, I now can't get
my server to recognise a new harddrive, but that's a another story!

Thanks for your help, much appreciated,

Ant.
