windows update for windows xp

I receive the following message when trying access Windows Update. I follow
the instructions for Registering or reinstalling the recommended files but
keep getting this same screen. Can anyone assist with this please??? I am
unable to get any updates at this point and I'm trying everything NOT to
format my drive. Thank you.

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem
