Windows update won't go past version checking

Hello

I have a Windows XP pro SP2 system that will not update from the windows
update site. After it checks for the update version, and the express or
custom option windows is loaded, clicking either one does nothing, no
errors, and no dialog boxes.
I have also found that other sites that have Java script buttons also don't
work. I have followed dozens links in search of a solution, but nothing has
worked.

I had recently removed a toolbar spyware from IE that AdAware would not
remove (it always came back). I had gone into the registry to remove
references to it, and may have messed up (I didn't do a registry export
before hand). There is a two month old backup to pull from if necessary.

Also when opening Outlook 2003, there is an error

Internet Explorer Script Error
Line: 298
Char: 1
Error: Access denied
Code: 0
URL: outlook:today

After reading other post hear about other problems with Java scripts and
SP2, is this problem related? and has a solution been found?

Thanks
Bill

These two items did it for me.

2a. Start>Run>Regsvr32 vbscript.dll

2b. Start>Run>Regsvr32 jscript.dll

(WinXP users who have problems with 2a and 2b, see
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_9.htm)

3. Re-register all DLLs listed in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679

There where others options given, but this is all it took.
