I go to Windows Update and nothing happens, no error messages, no scanning,
nothing. Office Update scans but says I am missing files needed to run the
scan and update. How can I get back those files needed to reset the update
scanning properly?

I have WindowsXP Pro SP2 on a Dell Dimension 8400.

Thanks

You cannot gain access to the Windows Update Web site

Don't know if this will help. I was trying to update a computer running
Windows ME that I previously updated regularly with no problem. Then, started
having a problem similar to yours. I eventually solved my problem by going to
Microsoft's knowledge base. Did a query. I think I typed something simple
like scanning for updates, or zero updates. Anyway, it homed in on the
problem pretty quickly, and the problem and fix was obvious. Turns out there
was a very small, free patch that needed to be downloaded and installed. Once
I did that, it now scans, downloads and works normally. Wish I could remember
the exact details, but if you try my suggestion of going to the Microsoft
knowledge base, you may be able to get there and do the download to totally
remedy your issues. Good luck!
