Windows update won't!

Logging on to Windows update, my computer gets scanned Ok (there are two
critical updates and one for Windows ME).

However, when I click on download and install I get the pop-up saying that
windows update "is downloading the updates to be installed on your computer -
please Wait" and "preparing to download"

but then - nothing happens even when I wait an age.

Any ideas?
