i have the same problem, but it was fine before couple days, now it wont let
me update and wont let me turn the automatic update ON.

i have windows vista business edition.

Is the Windows Update service started ?
What happens when you start it from within the Services console ?

If the Windows Update service fails to start with an error,
specifically, error 1508, then there's a good chance that a malware
known as Vundo/Virtumonde is causing this issue.

I have Winows XP and I am having the same problem with It saying updates are
turned off ; how do You remove Virtumonde ? I have scanned and quarantined
and deleted and ignored and it still comes back ? Any suggestions without
DLing anything new ? It was gone for a few days now it is back and I have
AVG antispyware and Spybot search and Destroy ; Does it cause any damage or
what not to your computer ?

I had the same proble and it got sorted out, it is some kind of trojan, go to
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm
and run the online canner of microsoft it detects & cleans the system, other
vius scaners are not able to find this. It wil take a couple of hours.

My computer caught a Virtumonde virus that suddenly started giving unwanted
pop ups ( not suitable for the child who was using the computer). Then it
corrupted my windows update so that it wouldnt turn on, and finally it
stopped me getting any updates whatsoever.
I tried all sorts of virus scans including AVG and Adaware, but tho they
could detect the threat, they couldnt get rid of it.
The link to http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm given by
jaggicandico scanned my computer (took nearly 2 hrs) and cleaned it up
completely.
Windows updates sprang into life, and all is well!
