On both my desktop and my laptop (xp home and xp pro) the automatic updates
have failed. When I go manually to updates the windows appears stating that
it is checking my system (active x for this is installed) then it flicks to
install and register. I then click t to do this which it appears to do and
then returns to the update page and goes through the checking for updates
again. Once it has done that it returns again to the install and register
page. it will continue to go around in this loop until you get fed up and
although it gives the impression that it has updated it has not. Does anyone
have the answer for this. I have also discovered that my systems last updates
were in March !!

Also i do not get an error msg on either system - 0x800----- etc

I am not saying this is the case. But if you are using a version being used
by anyone else. Then whomever gets the updates first, gets them. Those that
try after fail. It's part of Microsoft's new security features.

If you purchased the OP with your computer. You might want to check to be
sure that they didn't install the OP with the same serial number on another
computer. You can check at http://www.microsoft.com to find out whether or
not your version is legal.

Success :-)

Thanks Mzy. The two systems I own were urchased seperately and pre loaded.
One from PC world and the other from simply computers. Both were built and
loaded by hewlett packard and both were brand new. Therefore, I must assume
that both are OK.

Where on the ms site are you able to check legality, bearing in mind that
the ms site was checking my systems quite happily upto eom march

Anything in the update log, errors etc?

How to view the Update log in Windows
Open Internet Explorer and either type or copy and then paste this into the Address
bar:
%windir%\windowsupdate.log

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093
