Windows update works - Microsoft update doesn't

My OS is XP Pro SP2, fully patched, with IE7 as browser. Windows update
page works fine but when I accept the offer on that page to install an
Activex add-on and switch to Microsoft update, scanning for updates never
completes. There are no error messages. Any ideas on where the problem
might lie?

Have you checked your Microsoftupdate.log for errors? What does it show?

Hope this helps.

Has MS now started logging in MicrosoftUpdate.log versus WindowsUpdate.log?

Gerry,

I don't have Microsoftupdate.log. Just WindowsUpdate.log.

Gerry,

This guide to interpreting the WindowsUpdate.log is new to me. I'll try to
switch from Windows to Microsoft update again and look at the log if things
don't go smoothly with better understanding next time.

Thanks,

Steve

I decided to ask Microsoft Technical Support for help with this updating
problem. They asked me to download Dial-a-Fix and to carry out quite a lot
of checks and reregisterings of dlls, resettings of security levels,
emptying of temporary folders, etc. The result is that I can now update
from the Microsoft website. It appears that the Microsoft updating website
is more finicky than the Windows updating website. More than one thing had
to be reset to get the Microsoft updates working.
