Windows Update for XP - HP LaserJet 2300 Driver doesn't work

I recently used windows update on an XP PC which said there was a new HP
Laserjet 2300 driver released on 22 August 2004 and I allowed it to install.

Since installation, selecting the pritner preferences causes a protection
fault, and since the default preference is for the wrong type of paper and
the wrong orientation amongst other things it means the driver is no use !!

I could find no way of un-installing the update and had to resort to a
system restore (which I fortunately had enabled).

For future reference incase other users automatically install the update.
and to cater for those with System restore turned off !!
How could / should I have removed the update ?

You could have used roll back, on the driver, in hardware.
BTW it is NOT reccommended to use winupdate for any drivers, causes to many
problems, as you've found.
Use only drivers from hw.manu.web site.

Sorry I'm not sure what you mean by "on the driver, in hardware"
If you mean under Device manager, it doesn't include printer drivers !
or am I missing something (quite likely).

As regards HP vs MS drivers I have normally found the HP ones cause more
problems not less.
I wouldn't even be trying to update the driver except that there is a minor
problem with the existing one.

Thanks for trying, and any other pointers appreciated.

No your not missing something, my mind was elsewere!!(on other hardware)
The Drivers on winupdate are (usually) the HP drivers repackaged by MS.
I know specifically the both Nvidea and SI drivers released on winupdate
have been corrupt.
Winupdate drivers, version #, can differ from hw manu. version # for the
same driver
MSVP's frequently state not to use winupdate drivers.
I believe the HP installation disk may have an uninstaller, whether this
would uninstall all HP drivers?
Just being curious what version # is shown on your new hp driver?
