I installed the Microsoft Windows updates (see subject line) as recommended
by Microsoft. Following an apparently successfull update, I found my Windows
Explorer application would not terminate. Note that it ran ok (I was very
lucky), but just wouldn't terminate. I had to kill it using the Task Manager.

I browsed the web and discovered others reporting problems with Word, icons
not being displayed on their desktop correctly, and other applications
following the installation of the above updates.

I uninstalled the four updates and found that my Windows Explorer problem
was gone. Note that I could have tried uninstalling them one at a time but
it struck me like, since they were installed as a group, it would probable be
best to uninstall them all.

I am not a Windows expert by any means so, if you decide to delete the
upgrades, tread carefully and proceed at your own risk. From my experience,
you want to uninstall KB908531 last and then do a reboot.

Questions for Microsoft: How will we know if in fact one of the above
listed updates is bad? And if it is, how well we know when it is safe to
proceed installing Windows updates?

Thanks, and I hope this helps somebody.

That wasn't my experience csblue. When I tried to install KB908531 by itself
I was warned by Windows that other updates might not run properly... in other
words they might have dependencies on it. Strikes me like it's probably
safest to uninstall the whole set. But like I said, I'm flying by the seat
of my pants on this. I'm only relating what seems to have worked for me.

I tracked my problems to a HP Share to Web program. I didn't use it so I
uninstalled and then reapplied Kb908531 with no problems.

After the subject updates were installed on 4/11/06 (automatic), I was no
longer able to open mail in Outlook Express. I received an error message
indicating there was a problem with the configuration and I should reinstall
the program. After uninstalling KB911567, Outlook Express returned to
normal. Automatic Update reinstalled KB911567 on the 13th, and once again OE
would not open mail messages. Is anyone else seeing this problem?? Is
anyone aware of a workaround other than not installing KB911567??

Hmmmmm, the problem grows more interesting. But... I don't know of, and
haven't yet heard of any workaround other than to de-install the above
mentioned updates. Sounds like you have Automatic Update enabled??? If so,
you probably should consider disabling it so that it notifies you of updates
but doesn't proceed with them until you approve.

I'm thinking we should just not install anymore updates until we hear
something from MicroSoft and just sort of let the dust settle a bit.

Good Luck.

sharing your experience....I may be uninstalling them.

Simply call the Microsoft PC Safety Group and they can help you fix
this error. I got the error with update KB911567. A nice lady fixed me
up in about 10 minutes at no charge.
