Windows update (XP SR2 / IE7) taking ages

Hi

I'm having trouble using the windows update manually (in IE7 chose
tools/windows update and than either express or custom).
When trying to do this, IE7 comes practically to a halt.
The svchost process is taking up 90+% of cpu time or something alike and
wuaclt.exe (child process of svchost) takes up little or none time.

All in all it takes 15 minutes or more before I finally see the list of
updates. Right now there are only 2, none high priority, one winXP
(optional/ KB934268) and one optional hardware (for an usb/pci card).

I'll install both.

Can anyone help me finding out why it is taking so long for windows
update to run?

Thanks

Gerard

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe
*plus*

should normalize the situation again. See also

Thanks, but...

it didn't help. I installed the new windowsupdate 3.0 as well as the hotfix.
When i tried windowsupdate in ie7 it first checked if I head the latest
version of the update software. Said I hadn't and told me to install
something (i didn't take notice what exactly, stupid me). But I did and
after that windowsupdate still took something like 10 minutes or so.

So I thought that perhaps the 3.0 was overwritten by the (older) win
update program that IE7 told me to install.
So I reinstalled bothh downloads again: the winupdate 3.0 and the
hotfix. Hotfix seemed to install fine and the winupdate 3.0 quit
installing because I already had the 3.0 version.

Tried windowsupdate again. Same result again: 10 minutes or more, before
telling me that there are no updates available.

Hope I uderstood correctly what i needed tot do.

Thanks anyway

Gerard

That's "normal" using *Microsoft Update*.
The main difference after installing WU Agent 3.0 is simply, that
the system stays responsive, _although_ you may still see temporary
peaks of an svchost.exe instance consuming >90 % CPU. Without the
new client software, your machine/Windows my feel "freezed" not
responding any action you take.

In case the trouble is the 10 minutes timeframe, simply switch back
from Microsoft Update to Windows Update - but you'll have to look
for Office updates separatly then.

Hi Gerard,
Even after installing 3.0 client, it is expected that CPU usage will be high
when WU is scanning for updates.
But the overall UI on the machine will be responsive. You should be able to
switch to other applications and use them. (though they will be somewhat
sluggish because CPU is being shared with WU client)
In addition, there should be some improvment in the overall time to show the
updates compared to 2.0 client. The actual time will depend on the number of
updates that are being checked. If you have a number of applications like
Microsoft Office, Visual Studio, SQL server, then it is expected to take a
long time depending on CPU speed on the machine.

Please let us know if you still see that the machine is unusable even after
installing 3.0 client and doing a WU scan.
