Windows Updater/Shutting Down--Help Please!!!

I am having a problem shutting down. I through many hours of frustation
realized that when I end task the windows updater I have a clean shut down.
I have tried to stop this from being loaded (i.e., selective startup), but
everytime I connect to the internet (dial up) I find that it automatically
loads up.
Question 1: why is the updater causing a shut down problem
Question 2: If I can't fix question 1 then how do I prevent the windows
updater from loading.

Your problem is with wupdater.exe? If so, this is nothing to do with
Windows Update, it's spyware and you should remove it immediately - make
sure your AV software is up to date etc.. Search on "wupdater.exe removal"
and you should get a lot of info.
