Windows Updater

I see on my windows toolbar the windows updater Icon, go to click on it, and
when I place the pointer over it it says "Windows can't check for updates".
And when I click on the Icon to update a window pops on the screen and it
looks like it is trying to update but then it stops and A warning sign pops
on and says to check for updates. How do I fix this?.....very frustrating!!!!
