Windows updates on 4/15 have screwed up Vista!

A bunch of updates downloaded on 4/15 and now my laptop takes forever to boot
up and my network is gone. I mean just gone! There's no network listed. The
diagnostic message is that it's not configured and/or there's no connectivity
detected. When I click on the icon for the 'net it says system or something
didn't start. Well, it was working before the updates!

When I tried to go back to a restore point before the updates, I got a black
screen saying a file was missing or corrupt and to put my system disc in. I
did and it said it repaired and was back to 4/14 config. But it's not!

I'm going to have to pay to have this issue fixed! Is Microsoft going to
reimburse me? This is their screw up!

Please do yourself a favor by switching off Microsoft Updates
because they are not required at all. What you need is Windows XP
with SP3 and your Windows Firewall configured not to allow any
exceptions. For anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware, you need MSE (Free
from Microsoft website) and Avast free version as a fail back.
you don't need anything else.

Before you or anybody ask me, I have not installed any updates
since SP3 was released and I have absolutely no intention of
installing any. I have not had any attacks or viruses either.

Although this advice is ignorant (IMO) even when it is well placed (and,
IMO, should not be followed by anyone) - this time the ignorance level
jumped a good 100%. Why? It is painfully obvious you did not even read the
subject of the posting, much less the body.

Your advice (ignorant IMO) not only centers around an operating system of no
interest in this posting but you actually advise that the original poster
(whose subject clearly stated "Vista" as the operating system) switch off
Windows Updates and they need Windows XP with Service Pack 3. Service Pack
3 for Windows XP on their Windows Vista system? Or does turning off their
Windows Updates somehow downgrade them to Windows XP (in your world)? Or
are you actually (or will now claim it anyway) telling them that you meant
they uninstall Windows Vista and install Windows XP and patch up to Service
Pack 3?

As for the OP - sounds like a possible double-whammy. Perhaps you had a bad
disk drive and/or malware.

What backups do you have? (System Restore is *not* nor was it ever intended
to be a backup of your system - but of important system files.)

Have you checked the laptop manufacturer's web page (downloads or support
section) for the latested hardware device drivers?

What edition and architecture of Windows Vista are you running?
Was it updated with the latest service pack (2) before this?

What antivirus software do you utilize? Is it kept updated?

What antimalware software do you utilize? Was it kept updated?

When was the last time you performed a CHKDSK on your laptop hard drive?

In the end - it comes down to backups and whether or not you had them. You
may want to consider starting them as soon as your system is back to a
working state... I recommend the Seagate Replica for ease of use and
completeness of function.

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2)
when posting in a forum or newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Hi, PA Bear:

I had the same problem as the original poster. I installed the updates on
4/14 and my laptop went haywire. It is a HP G60 series laptop, running
Windows Vista Home Basic, with SP2, on a 32-bit OS. I am very attentive
about installing Windows updates when they are available, and this is the
first time things went terribly wrong.

So after the updates are installed, my system does its thing by rebooting on
its own. When I log into my computer, I see “Preparing desktop . . .” on my
screen as it attempts to log me on. When I am finally logged in, I get
countless messages, such as “IP Helper stopped working,” “WIN32 system file
not found,” and “Host Process stopped working so Windows shut it down.” The
last two messages are actual error messages, but I forgot to write down the
exact words.

Also, I use Windows Live OneCare as my antivirus software. Each time that I
would reboot and log into my computer, the OneCare icon would be red (meaning
critical action must be taken) and, after opening up the software, I would
find that my firewall protection has been shut off. And I get a message from
Windows Security Center (from the red-X, shield icon in the system tray)
alerting me that there are multiple issues with the security of my system.
When I open Windows Security Center, although the window is frozen, I can see
that almost all of my security settings are off but I cannot make any
changes. At this point, I can only reboot my system.

Note also – I have already installed these latest updates on my work
computer (a Dell desktop running MS Vista Professional, with SP2, on a 64-bit
OS (I believe)). The updates installed perfectly, with absolutely no issues.

So as a temporary resolve to the issues, I decided to use System Restore to
restore my system back to the way it was before the updates. This fixed
everything (of course). But since I have Windows Updates set up to install
automatically, the updates were installed again last night. I encountered the
same issues and had to restore my system again and change my settings for
Windows Update to download, but to not install the updates. I want to be
able to update my system without the issues. Any suggestions? Are there
specific updates from this latest batch that can be installed without the
others? Perhaps MS has found that some updates are causing the issues, not
all.

Hi,

Please also note that I have Windows Live OneCare on my work computer as well.

Thanks!

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problem
and computer. In your first post:

1. State your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2; Vista
SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2).

2. Tell us when your current OneCare subscription expires and if it had ever
expired in the past (even if only for a few days).

3. Tell us if a Norton or McAfee application had ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free trial version which came preinstalled on the computer
when you bought it).

4. Tell us if the behavior you've encountered is a sudden, new problem.

Thank you.
