Windows Updates always fail to Install

Hey I was wondering could anyone help me, I have a friend who asked me to
take a look at his laptop which his son & daughter also use and became
infested with spyware and viruses.

I cleaned out all the malware with a combination of HiJack This, Ad-Aware,
Spybot and Avast AV and the system is now back in perfect working order with
the exception of one part Windows Update...

When I go to WU at first it prompted for the WGA installation it downloads
the file and then tries to install it but fails and that’s all that happens.
But wait the WGA plug-in installs and works if I go to a page on Microsoft’s
web site requiring a validation check like Windows Defender.

So I went back to WU and this time it gets through to install updates but
after installing the same thing happens again it fails and another odd thing
is that it displays the file size of the item you just tried to install as
0kb and on subsequent return to WU the same update now says 0kb file size in
the listings.

So can anyone tell me how to fix this as I have tried many things to but
with no success which I will list below ?


Attempted fixes in no particular order;
Re-installed SP2
Installed IE7
Ran un-official WU repair utility (this gets the best results everything
goes back to normal and the updates file size are correcty listed but it
still fails downloading and attempting to install it)
Removed/Installed Windows Install 3.1 v2
Deleted all file related to WU
Deleted all files related to WGA
Reinstalled files for WGA/WU
Manually attempted repair of WU
Ran the WGA verify tool
Ran SFC
Checked the required services are running (they are)

I did also install Windows Defender and it too fails to update its
definitions, in the event log it says an MSI install error occurred but I
already tried removing Windows Installer to no effect.

It’s just this last thing then I can hand him back the laptop, anyone any
clues ??

I also forgot to add on the Windows Update log here it is hopefully somebody
can tell me whats wrong from this, I do notice a lot of teoken SID errors
could this be the cause of the updates failing to install ?

I don't know what they mean, but these few lines contain the crux of the
issue.

Success the problem is fixed after posting the first half of the log above I
noticed the error cde which I hadnt seen after looking up the error code it
brought me to this link

After looking at the section about the registry in the link above I went and
looked and found the all the entries that were meant to be there were not. So
I exported all the missing keys from my computer and importeted them into his
and on the next reboot WU worked and I was able to install the updates.

Problem solved thank god for that.

Tip for anyone from Microsoft reading this you should really make users more
aware of the WU log as the error message that was in the log that allowed me
to fix the problem was not displayed on the WU summary after installing the
updates failed.
