Windows Automatic Updates for August were run on Monday 25th. I had logged
on to my computer as normal with my username and password.
After updates received, I chose to restart there and then. Result: desktop
settings lost, including picture used as wallpaper gone: My Documents empty:
My Pictures empty, apart from athlete sample; Keyboard changed from UK to US
English and this cannot now be changed via Control Panel for this user e.g.
could not print @ symbol only ''. Zone Labs directory emptied of Zonelabs
firewall software for all users: Lotus directory emptied of Organizer
software (diary) for this user. Mozilla Thunderbird email account no longer
available for this user, including Address Book of this user gone. For
another user (wife)no problems when logged on.
What has the updating done to my system? Did virus check and unable to
open 5 files 4 of which were those of August updates and another was related
to these.
Some hassle! But I was able to utilise .bak files to retrieve information.
I had to reset the email account and start a new address book. I am not aware
of any other activity being carried out that morning as I had just logged on
for the 1st time after being on holiday.
