WIndows Updates Crashes

Reinstalled XP Home on a new Hard drive with the Presario Restore DVD's.
Worked find. DL'ed some Windows Updates.

Rebooted.

Windows Updates hangs.

"Do you want to send error repoart?" I click Send Error Report. The
Windows Updates IE 7.x page closes. Just started today, Wed, May 30.

Restarted. Crashes. Tried using Help and Support. Crashes the Help and
SUpport Page.

Using XP Home on Presario AMD CPS, 1024 RAM.

It's not quite clear what you mean by "crashes". If there are specific
messages or error numbers, please quote them precisely.

In the meantime, to clear out the possibility of some well-known problems
which might cause some of your symptoms, please do the following.

Before doing the items below, ensure that you have disabled all 3rd-party
anti-virus, anti-spyware, popup-blocker, download accelerator, or firewall.
If you disabled a 3rd-party firewall, then re-enable Windows Firewall for
the duration.

You might need to stop Automatic Updates while you apply these two fixes:
open a command prompt window and type the command:

net stop wuauserv

For a fix to the above problem, please do BOTH of the following:

1. (not for Vista) If your update history shows that you do not yet have
update KB927891 installed, then download and install update KB927891 ver3:
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891>
and then restart Windows.

2. For 32-bit systems, download and save to hard disk, and then install:
<http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe>

If this produces an error message about "Update agent already
installed", then execute the installer again manually, with parameter
/wuforce as in (at a comand prompt window):

WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

Then visit Microsoft Update again, and report back whether your problem is
fixed.

See <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494> for more information.

Robin, I have the identical problem. New HD, reinstalled XP-Home twice.
Hangs means that Windows Update takes forever and a day and hogs memory with
svchst at 100% CPU. No other programs will run - you just get an hourglass
for a moment and the program doesn't open. Hard reboot is only solution.
After reboot, computer continues to be slow with all programs, with only
solution to be a system restore to a point prior to using Windows Update,
which I fortunately was insightful enough to do. I updated Windows all the
way up to SP2, then I stopped proceeding with additional updates. I did go
ahead and install IE7 separately and computer is still working fine. As I
head down the update path, I continue to save a sys restore point prior to
each update. I can assure you it hasn't been a picnic rebuilding Windows
twice due to this Windows Update issue. A google search suggested that one
should not use Microsoft Update, rather stick with the simpler Windows
update, but I can't validate this claim.

Go to the above link. Yowza, makes you wonder if this "issue" is prompting
folks to upgrade to Vista with a new computer. I certainly considered doing
so...

This is the error message. It has no number or specifit webpage help file.
I am following your previous advice now.

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
For self-help options:

a.. Frequently Asked Questions

b.. Find Solutions

c.. Windows Update Newsgroup

The two fixes in my previous post should fix the problems you are seeing.

Windows Update should do this anyway.

Yes, the problem only seems to appear with Microsoft Update, and especially
if you have Office 2003 installed.

Usually there is an 8-digit error number displayed when this error message
appears. Please can you copy the error number.

Robin, your previous advice with the 2 links fixed it. Both were run and
DL'ed and the PC restarted and now all the updates have completed.

I looked for the 8 digit error message number but there was none, just the
message I copied and pasted here.

But all is well thats ends well. Enjoy your Cajun Gumbo I sent you from the
French Quarter.

Regards from New Orleans

Robin, I'm getting the following error when I try to install the second
program you listed. The error message I get is: "Install failed with the
following error number: 0x80070420." Any ideas what causes this error?
