I went to the Micosoft Update site, site checked my comp for updates, Windows
98 SE it found 7 critical updates which I downloaded and installed.. I then
rebooted comp and tried to go back and get the windows media player update
from the same site, and I got an error message that told me I had to have
administrator do this..
I tried everything and now I cant update ANYTHING ro go to Trend Micro or PC
Pitstop as they say I am not the administrator also..
I tried fix mentioned here in registry that changes permission to use, and
I dont have that option (permission) available.. I need help quick!!
Running Win 98 SE 4.10.2222A

Open support calls to fir windows update.
Only many people complaining about their brtoken software will make them
want to do something.
Windows update is broken by the last round of updates, evident by the
massive increase in posted issues with it over the last two weeks.

Called Microsoft and was told it was my computer and not their update, and I
would have to pay $35.00 a question.. I refused to pay as my comp was fine
until after the install.. I was then told that I would probably have to redo
my whole computer including windows as Micosoft could not legally tell me how
to get the administrative password.. I DONT HAVE ONE... They put me on hold
and I hung up after an hour...

BS., windows update has broken your machine and they cannot make you pay for
support.

Call back and tell them this and insist they do something.

I agree the hold thing is BS, but work while on hold.

I had a follow up appointment with R&D, but they cancelled because he is
sick.
However, I have an appointment tonight.

There is no fn way they can conitinue to blame users for this when our
machines worked fine before their updates.

I am going to the press with this bs.
All the press and media I can find, if they don't fix this sh tonight.

Best thing for a short-run fix is to uninstall update KB905915.......or
KB896688. (add/remove programs)

Then call Microsoft again as suggested. They are basically not writing
proper code for these updates....especially for Windows 98 and SE. This has
been going on way too long and it's on our backs!
