Is this still supported?

The scan seems to work I got
Windows Update has found 9 critical updates for your computer.

Review and install updates

Windows Update has also found other updates for your computer. To
browse through these updates and select the ones you want to install,
click a category title in the list.

An error occurred while scanning for driver updates. We are not able to
display any updated drivers for your system.

You can also get online support if you are having problems with Windows
Update.

Then I clicked Review and install updates, the page never shows up.
The browser eventually says Action Cancelled.
This is a Gateway solo 9100 notebook (p-ii) with latest IE on Windows
ME.

I tried Win2k and seems to have the same problem. I access internet
from home dsl through a netgear wireless router. This pc only has
wireless card so I can't directly connect to the internet. I have an xp
pc that updates fine.

Thanks,

I have tried everything in this that applies to Windows ME. It still
has the same problem.

I think I have no connection/firewall issues because it did scan all
the upgrades correctly.
My time is also correct.

The two errors:
1. After the the scan it has
> > An error occurred while scanning for driver updates. We are not

able to
> > display any updated drivers for your system.

which I believe contribute to
2. in the log file

Did you also follow the Windows Update Checklist, step U on the checklist?

Also as you suggest it should work.
However you should get drivers directly from the manufacturer and avoid
getting the drivers from Windows Update.
This is especially true for portables such as tablets and notebooks.
If you only have the issue with the driver updates, it may be a non issue.

Jupiter,

Yes I did follow Step U.

My issue is with critical updates:
After scan it lists 9 criticals 43 MEs, and because of error 0x800c0008
0 driver update. In fact the driver field is grayed out.

At this point I don't really care about driver update. I want to
install the criticals. But it fails every time with Action Cancelled.

Thanks,

I would have doublechecked Step I (Language use)

Since this about WUv4 you may have to use Google Groups
advanced search to go back about a year and see what was being
recommended for this symptom then.

What is your objective? To try to understand better how WU is supposed
to work or just to install some patches and get on with other things?
If it is only the latter I would just use WU as a guide for which patches
to download and install them manually. If you have problems installing
them manually you may get better help from newsgroups which specialize
in the products concerned.

Or, if you would like to try to get WU working you are going to have to do
some diagnosis on your own or start providing a lot more details about
your symptoms.

Good luck

Robert,

I am giving this old laptop to an elder relative who knows nothing
about computer. I set up a few web sites that she likes to read for
her.

I would like to have all the critical patches installed and have the
auto update enabled so hopefuuly she will have less a chance to have
virus or other headaches.

The problem now is that I can scan and find there are 9 critical
updates.
But I can't go any further. I can't see what they are. I went to MS's
manual download area and find a few ME related critical updates. I
installed them but afterwards the scan still showed me that I have 9
criticals.

The log only has this one error 800c0008 which I believe is due to the
driver
update. I think because it has this error to find update for drivers,
Windows update refused to install critical updates. That, to me, is a
bug.

I digged out an old desktop that I supposed to throw away and
reinstalled the win me from scratch. Its update works fine. I think
this eliminates the possibility that my network env being a problem.
For this laptop I have a good reason not to install the os from scrach.

So this is the case and I think I exhaused most of my options. I hope
some knowledge people can provide an answer. I can't be the only who
has this problem.

Hmm... I wasn't aware of this

<title>KB268331 - Description of Automatic Updates in Windows Millennium Edition (Me)</title>

(MSKB search for
"critical update notification"
)

> The problem now is that I can scan and find there are 9 critical

I have been assuming that Win ME users can't use WUv5.
Since they apparently have a kind of AU perhaps that idea is incorrect?
(not necessarily because XP originally used WUv4 with its AU too.)
So where are you seeing this count? E.g., in an AU dialog or in a WU webpage?

Are you using WUv4 or WUv5?
If you are using WUv5 I imagine that you should be able
to see better clues about your symptom in WindowsUpdate.log
E.g. even though the UI is only showing you a count,
you may be able to see the actual list of updates in the log.
I think that that will be less likely with WUv4 but it has been
so long since I saw WUv4 in action I can't remember exactly.
That's why I suggested using Google Groups and going back
about a year. You would have found more WinME incidents
then too but even more I suspect (and likely more current ones)
if you searched windowsme newsgroup archives.

That's strange. There was discussion about WUv5's log
in those newsgroups last summer. That would have been
while WUv5 was still being beta tested. It might have been
a mistake or premature announcement of something that
might have happened but didn't? (Otherwise I would expect
to see more recent discussions which referred to that log.)

I tried going back before that but think we are getting misled by
Google's Beta servers. (Perhaps there is a limited cache on them.)
Here's a sample search using the Canadian archive,
filtering on possible answers from MVP or MSFT personnel:

In any case, in an attempt to find out what diagnostics you really have,
what I suggest you do is try to find out which files were modified during
the day of the update attempt, sort that list by timestamp to narrow it down
to the minute and then try opening likely looking files for what is readable.
(E.g. use Win-F (or whatever you use to search your harddrive)
and search by Date. Then set view Details, and sort by Date Modified.)

Good luck

Robert
