Windows updates don't install or hangs

If you are having problems installing Windows updates (in my case
Windows 2000), the download works but once the installation begins, the
update hangs, then try the following :
- Uninstall Windows Installer 3.1 (v2)
- Reboot
- ReInstall Windows 3.1 Installer v2
- Reboot
- Now try the windows update again, or manually install the update

It worked for me !

I reinstalled XP, I am trying to get critical updates. there are about 80 of
them for me. I get them all downloaded, then when installation begins in
thinks for a while and tells me all 80+ updates failed to install.

I think I remember seeing Windows install 3.1 (I am not at home right now)
if I do uninstall this and then reinstall it, where do I go to get the
software to reinstall it? Off my install disk, or off the Microsoft site?

Go to Start > Run > type in

cmd

Click OK or press Enter

At the Command Prompt type in the below pressing Enter after each command

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 wups2.dll
net start wuauserv
exit

See if the updates install now
