Amongst other 'goodies', "Antivirus 2008" prevents the Automatic Update
service from running. Before repairing the AU service, you first need to
ensure that there are no hidden 'unwanted guests' still residing on the
system.
Suggest you vist a reputable anti-malware forum to be as sure as you
can, that no such 'guests' are still hanging around:
