Windows Updates- Error Code 8004002

When trying to install updates, this error codew comes up.

As well as this, I am unable to change the settings of Windows Updates, as
when I confirm changes by clicking 'ok' the page doesn't close.

Finally, the shut down button on the start menu now permanently says
'installs updates and shuts down your computer.' However, when this is
selected, it begins to download update 1/16, then shuts down, failing to
download anything.

I would be really grateful if anyone could help. I'm not really well
informed about computers, so if you could try and make any solution in rather
simple terms that would be great.

Try the following:-

Click Start, select run and type the following (pressing okay after each one) and wait for
the successful message:-

net.exe stop wuauserv (FYI - this stops the WU service)

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

net.exe start wuauserv (FYI - this starts the WU service)

Try WU again.
