Here you go - the Dial-a-fix program worked for me:
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Support Service. From your description, I understand that we reformatted the computer and had to update to Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). We try to install the latest Windows Updates, but the installation failed. The only message is that the computer is not allowing the updates to install. The issue may be caused by several factors, such as corrupted system DLL files, a corrupted Windows Update temporary folder, or corrupted Windows Update engine. I recommend the following steps: Step 1: Enter Safe Mode ==================== 1. Restart the computer and keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears. 2. Choose Safe Mode, and press Enter. After that, please continue to the next steps. (Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary. To return the system back to Normal Mode, we can simply restart the computer.) Step 2: Clear the WU temporary folder ==================== 1. Click "Start" -> "Run", copy each command below and press "OK" after input each one. (For your reference, I have enclosed a screenshot of the run line command.) cmd /c ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution sdoldd cmd /c ren %systemroot%\system32\CatRoot2 cr2old cmd /c del /q /f %systemroot%\system32\CatRoot\*.* cmd /c del /a:h /q /f %systemroot%\$hf_mig$\*.* cmd /c del %systemroot%\WindowsUpdate.log (You will receive a flash DOS like window after pressing "OK".) 2. Then, restart the system to normal mode. Step 3: Repair Windows Update with Dial-a-fix =================================== 1. Download Dial-a-fix.exe from the link below: http://djlizard.net/software/Dial-a-fix-v0.60.0.24.zip ; Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability. 2. Save the zip file to Desktop, right click on the zip file and choose "Extract" to extract all contents to the Desktop. 3. Double click the "Dial-a-fix.exe" to launch the application. 4. Fix the checkbox of "Fix Windows Update" in "WU/WUAU" area, and then click "Go" button. 5. Click “Log” (The icon displays as a document in the bottom of the window). 6. When the prompted window appears, Click "Save". Please save the file on the Desktop. (Note: It may take a while to repair Windows Update.) Step 4: Run Windows update again and collect the latest WindowsUpdate.log ================================================== ======== 1. Go to Windows Update website from the link below: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com ; If the installation still cannot go through, please collect the latest WindowsUpdate log. Dial-a-fix did work for me and I hope it's a "permanent" fix! If I have any
