I've had this problem for about a year, with the automatic updates failing
every time. I've worked with Microsoft help twice, with no luck. I was
thinking that I would eventually have to format my computer all over again.
Nothing worked.

BUT my Norton AV subscription just ran out and I decided to install the free
McAfee products now provided by Comcast. Right away, the McAfee security
center reported that Windows Update was disabled, and did I want to fix that?
I of course clicked on "enable," which it did, and now it works again.

Don't know what happened or why but this has been my experience. Perhaps
some spyware disabled the update function? I can't really blame Norton,
because another computer in the house running Norton did not have this
problem. All I cann say for sure is that McAfee fixed it.
thought you all would appreciate hearing about it.

Surely 99.999 % of the problem was caused by Norton.
Maybe WU Service was stopped and McAfee simply started it....

I have sort of the same problem - when I turn off my computer it says "Update
1 of 4 installing" and never really starts installing. I recently installed
the newest Norton with Spyware control. How do I enable MS rather than
disenabling it again?
