I am running xp sp2, auto updates enabled. I ran windows update today and
discovered many updates failing. It appears they stated failing in the last
few weeks. When I click on the red fail button, I get no response. Any way
to determine why they are failing? BTW, one of the updates in the 8/12 set
did install, most failed.

Check out the WindowsUpdate.log to see *when* the updates started to
fail to install, Need:

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Look for FATAL messages and post back with the error codes, please.
And, please, do *NOT* attempt to install the failed updates again.

QEDs:
1) What is the installed security software (antivirus/security suite/3rd
party firewall/etc.) ?
2) When was the last time the system was scanned for the presence of
malware ?

I have tryed the command to view the log, however it returns a message that
it is being used by another process. No display.

I am using Zonealarm security suite, and spybot. Scans have been done, both
anit virus, anti spam. Last scan was 8/7. Clean Scans.
