Windows updates freezes before it installs

Every time i try to run windows update it hangs in the install screen saying
" initializing " and it freezes up and the only thing i can do is, -control
alt delete- to get out of it, It does the same thing when auto update sends
them to my computer, It downloads them ok but it freezes up and it says "
initializing " (excuse my grammer) in the install screen...

I have the same problem on 2 of my 2003 servers, so I cannot install SP1...
Does anyone have a solution?
