windows updates installation failure

I have tried over 50 times to download windows updates (both express
automatic and custom) over the last two weeks but everytime I get a message
that updates failed to install. However, I am able to download "office"
updates. I have windows XP professional.

You must make sure these Win XP services are enabled and running:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Cryptographic Services
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
System Restore Service

Go to Start menu >Run > MSCONFIG <enter>
Click on the "Services" Tab & review these services. They should have a green "tick/check" mark on left; and status "Running" on the far right.

Do a basic sanity check .... insure you have at least 300 MB of free space on your C drive (assuming Windows is on C).

Do some cleanups:
From main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

*** Look at the Log File ****

Please post an *extract* from your Windows Update log.
Use Notepad or Wordpad and open & look at the Windows Update log file
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log or C:\WINNT\WindowsUpdate.log

Scroll down all the way. Get / copy / paste back here the set of lines for (today's ) the last session.

I tried to paste below today's log (13th June) but could not because the
"post was to long". So I am reducing it without knowing what to reduce in the
hope that it will still be of use to you. Also, I am not sure you wanted this
log or that for the date on which download falied (say 11th or 12th). Please
revert.

Upon sending a portion of the log file, I tried to download updates again
after following your instructions. Only one update was probably downloaded
but others failed. Some failed after downloading about 80-90%. I am posting

message that "....updates failed to install successfully". The latest
development is that I could download two critical/security updates. But most
of the the others fail after downloading 326 KB irrespective of each download
file size.

options", "Microsoft download centre" and then searching individual updates
by their nos. e.g. KB885250. However, I stiil don't know why automatic
updates failed. Thank you all for great help.

Besides that error what was interesting is the 801901A9 "transient error"
which was reported after that. Going by interpretation of other 8019... codes
that would mean that you were receiving an HTTP 425 response for some reason.
So far nobody else has reported this. One site explains HTTP 425 as meaning
"Locked" (whatever that means.) I would wonder if there is an intermediate cache
or firewall interfering with the downloading. In that case it may help to use https://
as the protocol prefix when accessing the WU site. (That's a trick which used to be
suggested for WUv4 users because it could defeat interference from intermediate
caches. I'm not sure if it would propagate sufficiently in WUv5 to have the same
effect or not. Simple enough to try to test the idea.)
