It sounds to me like you're installing a video driver from Windows Update.
This is not a good idea. Go to Control Panel>Windows Update and click on
the "change settings" link at the left. Provide authentication to UAC
prompts and change from Automatic to "download updates and let me know when
they're ready to install" (paraphrasing). Now when you have updates, you
can click on the link to see what the updates are. If there are driver
updates, don't install them. If you right-click on an update, you can
choose to hide it.

I don't think I've ever been given an automatic driver update.

They've always been optional.

I have seen video drivers come in automatically.
Almost every time it was the wrong driver and had to be rolled back...

See my new post,

Users of Microsofts live onecare are not allowed to cancel the immediate
download
of device drivers.

As you already know downloading device drivers from Microsoft update often
leads
to systems instability.

Regards

MS-MVP's should be making readers of this newsgroup aware of this.

I did see your post and am surprised that Live OneCare is even involved in
Windows Updates. But no one I know has it and I won't install it because it
is so dreadful so I really can't say whether this is correct or not.

However, I don't see any mention of Live OneCare in either of the OP's posts
so we can't assume that he has it.

If you are correct about OneCare doing this, then posting in its support
forums is the way to go.
