I no longer am able to get updates using the tools/windows update method.
Up until a couple of months ago, that wasn't a problem.
When I try it now, a window comes up saying it's searching to see if I have
the right software to be able to do it. Then a little security window appears
asking me to install some software from Microsoft. The software it's asking
me to install is Active X control. I click on install and nothing happens.
I have a Google tool bar that blocks pop ups but, I disable that and nothing
appears when I click on install again. No little information bar or anything
along those lines.
I get the error number 0x8ddd0004. I haven't noticed that error number in
any of the previous posts about this problem.
My operating system is Home XP and it's on my home computer that this
problem is happening.
I do have SP2 installed and this update problem has started after, haveing
SP2 installed for sometime.
My Automatic Update is turned on and I have received one update since this
problem began. I just don't know if I'm getting all the updates.
As far as I know, my computer is working properly. No virus or spyware on it
according to the antivirus and spyware programs I have.
I do just the basic Internet surfing and e-mail stuff so, I don't know why
all of a sudden I can't do the update the way I use to.
Does anyone have a simple solution to this problem?
Thank you

When accessing the Update site, you receive the 0x8ddd0004 error

1. Make sure your firewall is not blocking the Update site and check any pop up
stopper programs.

2. Now check in IE tools\manage add-ons (Win XP SP2 only) making sure that
WuWebControlClass is enabled. (Select "Add-ons that have been used by Internet
Explorer" in the "Show:" drop down list)

3. You may also wish to check c:\windows\Downloaded Program Files to see if anything
is corrupted there.

4. Make sure you accepted the Microsoft Trust Certificate

5. Check security settings, make sure they are not set too high

6. Delete cookies and temp files

7. Re-register these files, by clicking Start, Run and typing:-

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll

You should receive a successful message after each one.
Try Windows Update Again.

If that hasn’t helped you may need to re-register some more files:-

net stop cryptsvc
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
net start cryptsvc

You should receive a successful message after each one.

Hello "TaurArian [MVP]"
Thanks for your helpfull reply.
I checked out the downloaded program files like you suggested and I think I
found the problem.
When I opened the file, there were 7 windows that appeared. Each one of
these windows had to do with Active X control and each one of them showed the
status as being "damaged".
What caused that, I have no idea. I'm suprised that I even found that out!
Might you have a simple explanation on how to fix the damage?
I have some computer skill but it's pretty basic so, that's why I say a
simple explanation.
Or would it require takeing my computer to my local computer shop to fix the
problem?
Thanks
P.S. That WuWEBCONTROLCLASS isn't even listed in the "add ons that have been
used by Internet" of my manage add on section.
And all of those REGSRV things you mentioned are OK.
If you care to reply to this, you can send it to
paf21_@hotmail.com

Dear Taurian,
I too am unable to get windows update to function. I keep getting the
below error message. I tried your solutions after trying solutions from MS
Support. (instructions below from MS Support)

[Error number: 0x80072F76]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

I tried your solutions after trying solutions from MS Support.
(instructions below from MS Support) I don't find corrupted files or damage.
Everything is off or on according to advice given. I am really stumped.
When I request the Win Update from the tools menu, it auto directs to
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us

Please assist via email, if you don't mind taking the time. My email is

Thank you, Molly

Suggestion 1From MS Suppot)
=========
In order to resolve this issue, we need to register the ActiveX control
files needed to access the Windows Update Site. We need to do this since
the error can occur if these files are unregistered on your system. To
do this you can try the instructions provided below:

Note: There is a Single Space between the regsvr32 command and the file
name JSCRIPT.DLL . The same goes with all the commands provided below.

1. Click on Start, point to "Run"
2. Type in "regsvr32 JSCRIPT.DLL" (without double quotes) and
click Ok.
3. Type in "regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL" (without double quotes) and
click Ok.
4. Type in "regsvr32 ATL.DLL" (without double quotes) and
click Ok.
5. Type in "regsvr32 WUAPI.DLL" (without double quotes) and click
Ok.
6. Type in "regsvr32 WUAUENG.DLL" (without double quotes) and click
Ok.
7. Type in "regsvr32 WUAUENG1.DLL" (without double quotes) and
click Ok.
8. Type in "regsvr32 WUCLTUI.DLL" (without double quotes)
and click Ok.
9. Type in "regsvr32 WUPS.DLL" (without double quotes) and
click Ok.
10. Type in "regsvr32 WUWEB.DLL" (without double quotes) and
click Ok.

Now please try accessing the Windows Update Site again.

Suggestion 2:
=========
If you are still encountering the above error on Windows Update Site
then, we need to rename the Softwaredistribution folder from your
system. By renaming the folder we will be able to get the fresh copy of
ActiveX controls needed to access the Windows Update Site. To do this,
please try the steps
provided below:

We first need to close all the Open instances of Internet Explorer
Window.

Step 1: We need to Stop the Automatic Update and Background Intelligent
Transfer Services on your system:

1. Click Start > Run
2. Type "Services.msc" (w/o quotes)
3. Press OK
4. Find "Automatic Updates"
5. Right Click on the Automatic Updates Service and select Stop to stop
the service.
6. Now Find "Background Intelligent Transfer service"
7. Right Click on the Background Intelligent Transfer service and select
Stop to stop the service.

Step 2: Now try the instructions provided below to rename the
SoftwareDistribution from your system:

1. Click on Start, Run and in the Open box write "%systemroot%" (Without
Double Quotes) and press Enter.
2. It will open the root folder ( i.e. C:\Windows if you have installed
fresh copy of the Windows XP OR if you have upgraded over Windows NT
then it will open C:\WINNT) from your system.
3. Locate the SoftwareDistribution folder from the opened window Right
Click on the on the SoftwareDistribution folder and select Rename. Type
"OldSD", and press Enter.
4. Once we have renamed the folder try the Step 3.

Step 3: We need to Start the Automatic Update and Background Intelligent
Transfer Services on your system:

1. Click Start > Run
2. Type "Services.msc" (w/o quotes)
3. Press OK
4. Find "Automatic Updates"
5. Right Click on the Automatic Updates Service and select Start to
start the service.
6. Now Find "Background Intelligent Transfer service"
7. Right Click on the Background Intelligent Transfer service and select
Start to start the service.

Now try accessing the Windows Update Site and check if our issue is
resolved.

Make sure you haven’t got anything blocking Windows Update like Nortons, Zonealarm
etc
Also make sure you don’t have a Web Accelerator working in the background such as
NetZerio, HiSpeed, Speedband etc.

Dear TaurArian,

You are a genius..... It was the accelerator program provided by my
ISP.....I temporarily disable it when I want to run the window updates. In
addition, the Microsoft update feature for my other software is now now
working too.
I can't thank you enough for your insight and your assistance in resolving
my problem.......Smile.

You are the best...VPW
