same problem, svchost.exe stealing all CPU.

We installed the hotfix 927891 , but it did not seem to work.

We then turned off the Microsoft Updates, but left on Windows Automatic
Updates (per http://forums.pcworld.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=23188)

This fixed the problem, but now I'm concerned I'm not protected and not
getting all of the updates I need.

Any advice?

Thanks,

It's a two-part fix: Did you also install the newly released 'standalone'
version of Windows Update Agent 3.0, v7.0.6000.374? See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

cf.
http://blogs.technet.com/wsus/archiv...follow-up.aspx

With Windows Update as your default update source, you will need to check in
at Office Update to keep your Office applications fully patched:

1) Reboot and logon as a user with Administrative Privs...
2) Immediately run the following batch script (You will have to create it by

Yes when you are prompted.

- After you paste the above commands, please close the Notepad window.
Choose Yes when you are prompted to save the file.
- Click Start, Run, type:

The Process may take sometime.

3) Download/Install Windows Update v3.

4) Download/Install the 927891 patch.

5) Reboot.

Setup your updates however you desire. You could even just go the second
Tuesday of each month (or the day after would be wiser) to
http://windowsupdates.microsoft.com/ if it is a single machine.

No, only the first part.

We will go back and install the second.

Thank you!

Thank you for the detailed response. I'm quite hesitant to run scripts when I
don't know what they do.

Shouldn't installing the second part of the fix resolve my problem?

*Might*.

I have ran into several machine where the Windows Update + Patch hasn't done
the total trick.

I have not run into a case where re-registering the DLLs and clearing out
the downloaded updates directory and doing the Windows Update and Patch
haven't fixed it.

Essentially - you aren't running anything you cannot tell what you are
doing.. The script is out there ini the public view for all to see many
times over. You are mainly re-registering DLLs with that script.

If installing Windows Update 3.0 and the svchost=100% patch fixes you - so
be it. ;-)
