Windows updates shut down my internet connection, vista 64 bit hom

For the past week I have had to reboot my computer or set it to previous
settings at least three times to access IE. I have no firewall/virus
protection and I seem to lose IE after shutting down the computer and
allowing it to update. If I back up to a previous date, I will always need
updates, but it looks like it is the updates that are cutting me off from IE?
What should I do? I am not so techie.
