I think that I should up-date my windows ever so often but when I attempted
to do so there where so many. How do I know what I should be deleting and
saving to up-date with?

You shouldn't be deleting any. They all serve a purpose.

Service Pack 2 + the 60+ updates after it.
All of them should be installed - none uninstalled unless you have a
specific issue with one of them.

Thanks for your help. It just seems that since there is so many that it would
take alot of my much needed space to install all of them?

If it is *much needed* space - get more. It is not all that expensive.
Deals to make it even less so are offered all the time.

I devote 8GB (at least) to just Windows XP and all its intricacies all the
time. It usually only takes up 1/2 that with tons of extras (like Microsoft
Office 2003, etc.) - but better safe than sorry.

That was how many have been released since the release of Service Pack two
in August of 2004.
It is now March of 2006. Let's round to 60 hotfixes released since then and
it would be about 3 a month.

Things need patching. Problems are found between the OS and hardware of the
thousands(millions) of different configurations developing all the time or
the many software patches released or just a new way of exploiting some flaw
in the millions of lines of code that make Windows XP.

That's why SP2 + 60 or so post-sp2 patches.
