When I use Windows updates it tries to download updates for versions of
programs that are newer than the versions I have. For example, I have Word
2002 but Windows Updates keeps insisting that I should download updates for
Windows 2007. If I accepted such a download would it cause no problems or
could it, for example, replace one of my Word 2002 files by a Word 2007 file
of the same name and cause my copy of Word to malfunction?

Do you have the MS Office or Word converter installed?

Typo alert:
"I have Word 2002 but Windows Updates keeps insisting that I should download
updates for Windows 2007"

Assuming you meant:
"I have Word 2002 but Windows Updates keeps insisting that I should download
updates for Word 2007"

Now - the question is...

Do you have any of the 2007 converters/viewers installed so you could view
documents sent to you in the newer format?

You are more than a few versions behind - since Office 2002 products are
also known as Office XP products and since then Office 2003, Office 2007 and
Office 2010 products have been released.

And if you install an update that you really had no need for - it should not
affect anything since you did not obviously have the files it would have
changed...

So you *need* the update *for the product indicated*.

If Office Compatibility Pack (SP1/SP2) and/or Word Viewer 2007 and/or Excel
Viewer 2007 and/or PowerPoint Viewer 2007 is installed, the updates are
appropriate for your system.

No. There is no risk in installing these updates ... or to be more precise,
there is no greater risk than that involved in installing any other update.

Harry.

Many thanks for the replies. I shall download them next time I do a Windows
update and finally stop MS from nagging me!
