Typo alert:
"I have Word 2002 but Windows Updates keeps insisting that I should download
updates for Windows 2007"
Assuming you meant:
"I have Word 2002 but Windows Updates keeps insisting that I should download
updates for Word 2007"
Now - the question is...
Do you have any of the 2007 converters/viewers installed so you could view
documents sent to you in the newer format?
You are more than a few versions behind - since Office 2002 products are
also known as Office XP products and since then Office 2003, Office 2007 and
Office 2010 products have been released.
And if you install an update that you really had no need for - it should not
affect anything since you did not obviously have the files it would have
changed...
