Windows updates unable to be successfully installed

I have been trying for weeks now to get my windows updates to install. I
have tried a number of things with no luck. The updates download, but when
they are being installed it suddenly stops after a minute or two and states
failed. I get a message that says that the updates were unable to install
successfully. I DO NOT get an error message nor is their one when I view my
history. I have tried to install the updates through the website rather than
the automatic update method, but it still does not install. My update
history does not say failed next to the updates, but rather it says
"cancelled". The updates that I'm trying to install are the following:

Security Update for Windows XP (KB885835)
Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885836)

I have noticed that this newsgroup has many people with this same type of
problem. Does it have to do with the website? Does anyone have an answer?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

this issue.

How to view the Update log in Windows
Open Internet Explorer and either type or copy and then paste this into the Address
bar:
%windir%\windowsupdate.log

See if there are any error messages in your log as to why the updates failed then
perhaps someone here, not necessarily me can assist you with some information on how
to fix. Repost if necessary with any error codes.

I have a problem with my security update KB840987 which won't install. I
enclose my windows error log file. The Error 8007010b occurs what does this
mean? I assume from the log below it cannot find the location of the file it
wants to download and the down load failed. How can I solve this? Many thanks
for your assistance.

Thanks Taurarian. I didn't know how to do that. I did find the error code
by looking at my log. I get the error 0x8024000b

If anyone knows what that means or what I can do to fix it, please let me
know.

THANKS!
Dawn

I have FINALLY gotten all updates to install except
KB885835

In the history it does not say failed to intall. It says canceled;
therefore, I don't get an error code.

Does anyone have any clue how to fix this or why it s cancelling? It does
initialize, but about halfway through the installation, it cancels.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dawn

Do a search for any other diagnostics there may be,
perhaps a KB885835.log Look for clues in it instead.

Another approach to take which may be necessary anyway
to understand the other diagnostics is to look at the file manifest
in the corresponding Security Bulletin and see what versions
of those files that you currently have and any other attributes
they have which might affect the execution of the update.

A related factor would be to find out if the modules are in use
and if it might be possible to arrange for them not to be in use
e.g. by stopping whatever it is that you find is currently using
them (if possible.) Use the tasklist command to make such
a determination.
