windows updates won't load

I recenly went to windows updates and can't seem to get past error number
0x8DDD0018 it tells me to turn on automatic updates, turn on background
intelligent transfer service [bits], and event log, all are on but updates
for this computer won't load, the error base has no match for this error. Can
any one help please.

You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the "0x80246008"
code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from
the Microsoft Update Web site

Make sure that you have automatic updates turned on.

Make sure that the Remote Procedure Call Locator is not disabled:
Click Start, select Run and type in:
services.msc
Locate " Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator".
If it is disabled, then right click on it, go to 'Properties', change to 'manual' and
Apply.
Try Windows Update Again

This would have worked until recently, but I've got everything as per your
description on two very different computers and neither is getting any
updates.

The real nasty problem is they both have a svchost.exe process sitting at
50% CPU utilization and taking up 65, then 70 and sometimes up to 88 MB of
RAM. This starts from boot time and keeps going, making both machines stand
still, for all intents and purposes.

As soon as this process is killed, the computer comes back to life, but some
theme changes happen for some reason - the XP frames disappear, then
reappear, and the task bar resets itself to only one row (I have it at 2,
normally). Go figure!
