Windows Updates - Won't for MS Office 2003

I have several auto-updates that keep popping up. However, when I let them
install (on shutdown, manually, express, etc) they fail. Here is the latest

Have you ever run a so-called registry cleaner on this PC? This sort of
damage (error 80070643) has been seen in previous cases where registry
cleaners were involved.

Try the following steps until one works:

1. Disable all anti-virus, anti-spyware, popup-blocker, download accelerator
or 3rd-party firewall. If you disabled a 3rd-party firewall, then re-enable
Windows Firewall for the duration. Does that fix the update problem?

2. See whether http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884298 applies to you, and if
so whether the given registry patch works for you.

3. In any Office 2003 application, pull down the Help menu and select
"Detect and Repair", then follow instructions and have the Office 2003
installation CD ready. Afterwards, see whether updates are working now.

4. If nothing so far has worked, then use control panel "Add or Remove
programs" to uninstall Office 2003. Then re-install Office 2003 from the
installation CD. Then apply Office 2003 Service Pack 2, then visit Office
Update for about 15 post-SP2 updates.

Thanks for the feedback. In the interests of adding some science to this
black magic, have you any idea how that registry key got damaged or deleted?
Was a registry cleaner involved? If so, what was the name of the registry
cleaner that you suspect might be responsible?

If no registry cleaner had been involved, had anything out of the ordinary
befallen this PC between when Office 2003 was installed, and when this
update problem started occurring?
